Below are Julie's thoughts on creating this year's Bastille Day doodle (in English):

Who am I?

I come from Russia, but I am French at heart. I am a designer and my speciality is the crochet technique. I love France and Paris. I think blue, red and white are very chic and a timeless combination of colours.

What Bastille Day means for me

Bastille Day is, above all, a great celebration; tricolored flags, amazing fireworks close to the Eiffel tower and a lot of dancing in fire stations. (“Bal des pompiers” is how we call it.)

Doodle Idea

Although I found the idea of drawing attractive, I decided without hesitation to make the doodle using yarn and crochet. I imagined the letter 'L' to be a smiling Eiffel Tower. I found some inspiration from the stuffed Eiffel towers you can find in tourist shops around the monument. The fireworks and pompoms take on the colours of the French flags. For the letter 'O' I chose the “Cocarde,” a very graphic symbol of France and Bastille Day. To make a unified doodle, I also chose to sew the letters with blue, white and red threads. I thought with the GIF animation I could reproduce the atmosphere of celebration and fireworks.

Qui suis-je ?

Russe d’origine et Française d’adoption, créatrice qui navigue entre le crochet et le dessin dans un univers plutôt enfantin. J’adore la France, Paris et la combinaison bleu -blanc-rouge que je trouve très chic et intemporelle.

14 juillet pour moi.

Le 14 juillet pour moi est avant tout une grande fête avec des bals de pompiers, des drapeaux tricolores mais surtout un feu d’artifice géant au dessus de la Tour Eiffel.

Idée de Doodle.

Bien qu’attirée par la technique du dessin, j’ai decidé sans hésiter de faire un doodle en fil et au crochet. J’ai imaginé la lettre “L” en Tour Eiffel qui sourit - des peluches triangulaires et tricolores vendues dans les boutiques de souvenirs pour les touristes. Le feu d’artifice en pompons qui reprennent les couleurs du drapeau français. J’ai choisi le symbole de la France très graphique pour remplacer une des lettres “O”, la cocarde tricolore ( d’ailleurs j’ai appris que les couleurs étaient inversées ). Et pour rester fidèle jusqu’au bout au sujet choisi, j’ai ecrit les autres lettres en trois fils bleu blanc rouge. Je tenais à animer mon feu d’artifice pour vraiment avoir l’atmosphère de la fête.
